Medicare Geographic Classification

CMS allows hospitals who are receiving payment under IPPS to reclassify into a higher wage area in order to receive a higher payment rate. The geographic reclassification is an avenue for hospitals, including Urban, Rural, Sole Community and Rural Referral Centers.

The types of reclassifications include:

-    Individual hospital to another rural or urban area
-    All hospitals in rural county to urban area
-    All hospitals in urban county to another urban area
-    All hospitals in State reclassified to another State

Could your hospital benefit from geographic reclassification?  Our team of experts can help to determine if your hospital meets the criteria. If the analysis proves the reclassification is beneficial, our team will prepare and file your application with the Medicare Geographic Classification Review Board (MGCRB).
