Many LTC organizations today due not have the luxury of a comprehensive IT infrastructure in place for technology adoption or for ongoing support leaving leaders to fend for themselves. And without fully understanding the ever- changing technology world we live in, many leaders are paralyzed by the fear of spending significant money on a technology (or technologies) that they may not be optimally confident in. While technologies are undoubtedly strategic tools, organization leaders may not be aware of technology advancement nuances (especially with new AI integration) and details for data integrity benefit, potential security risks, impacts on resident privacy, and much more. And once an organization pulls the trigger on adopting a technology there is the onerous work of technology implementation with staff in an industry environment that is still reeling from staffing shortages in a significant number of LTC organizations. And, if leaders did not or do not gain new technology buy-in by staff along with a formal monitoring system in place, long term technology utilization may wane, rendering the technology adoption a complete bust.
Most LTC leaders do not have the time to become experts in technology advancements in addition to their other administrative duties. But leaders in LTC can, and should gain the assist of trusted outside consulting experts to ensure technology effectiveness for cost management, adoption, implementation, and utilization to meet improved operational performance and improved care delivery objectives. Technology implementation and utilization becomes the next significant challenge.
